St. Petersburg's Mayor has unveiled a new proposal that would allow the Rays to search for a new stadium outside of the city, but there's a concern that the city council won’t sign off on it.

The revised Memorandum of Understanding would give St. Petersburg all the financial rights to redeveloping Tropicana Field if the team decided to leave before their contract was up in 2027.

Council member Karl Nurse said he supports the new deal.

"I think now this is a dramatically better deal," said Nurse.

But Nurse is worried the other council members will vote it down.

"The challenge would be if we could sit down in a workshop and talk about it?" asked Nurse. "Can we convince a couple of colleagues that this is an opportunity. That would be my argument. While the economy is rolling this would be a good time to proceed on this."

The council is expected to start discussing the revised version next week.

The Mayor warned if the memorandum fails that the Rays will likely leave St. Petersburg and the region.
