A Pinellas Park woman was killed and four people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 19 in Palmetto.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened at U.S. 19 and 61st Street E. in Palmetto just after 4:30 p.m.

Investigators said Nancy R. Spurlock, 46, of Bradenton, was driving south on U.S. 19 when she lost control of her 2001 Dodge van. The van crossed the grass median, then traveled into the northbound lanes, where it hit the left side of a Chevy Suburban driven by Barbara Carvis, 51.

The impact sent the Suburban spinning until it came to a stop in the outside lane of U.S. 19.

A witness says he was broken down on the side of the road and saw the van and Suburban collide.

"I broke down and I turned around and I heard a big boom noise. And there goes the accident. It was up in smoke and fog," said witness Tommy Stewart.

Carvis died at the scene of the crash.

Three children inside the Suburban were taken to All Children's Hospital with serious injuries.

Spurlock was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
