A medical examiner testified that an infant found dead in her car seat last year in Lakeland starved to death.

Roy Stephens, 48, and the baby's mother, Ruby Stephens, 23, are charged with first degree murder in the death of 22-day-old Betsey.

The infant was found dead in her car seat in a Lakeland parking lot on Dec. 23.

During the bond hearing, a medical examiner testified that the baby had lost one-third of her body weight in the days since she was born.

According to records, Roy Stephens wasn't the baby's father, but had assumed parental responsibilities.

A judge ordered Stephens to be held without bond.

The family had traveled to Lakeland from their home in Indiana when the baby died.
