A woman was killed and a man critically injured in a four-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of I-275 in Pinellas County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened at the Roosevelt exit shortly after 12 p.m. Tuesday.

Troopers said traffic at mile marker 30 was stopped for a crash at mile marker 28. A 2012 Nissan was stopped in the center lane at the time, and a 2011 Ford SUV, driven by Nancy Hoffman Sjoberg, was stopped in front of the Nissan.

Richard O. Holter, 61, was also driving southbound in the center lane when troopers said he failed to stop, and the front of his Dodge pick-up truck hit the rear of the Nissan. The Nissan rotated until it came to a stop in the inside emergency lane, troopers said.

Holter's truck then hit the rear of the Ford SUV, which was pushed into the inside southbound lane, troopers said. The truck finally came to a stop in the outside lane, which is when it was hit by a 2005 Toyota driven by Eva Julia Philips, 21.

The Nissan's driver, Jeffrey Van Volkenburgh, 62, and his passenger, Nancy Van Volkenburgh, 58, both of Cornw Point, Indi., were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with serious injuries.

Nancy Van Volkenburgh later died from her injuries. Jeffrey Van Volkenburgh remains in critical condition.

Holter, Sjoberg and two passengers in Sjoberg's car all sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating. They say charges may be pending in the crash.
