The dog Tampa police officers found bleeding from gunshot wounds and tied to a railroad track is recovering.

In fact, the mixed-breed pit bull will not have to have a leg amputated. Two-year-old Cabela, named by the officers, had surgery on her right front leg Thursday.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Colby Burns was able to save the leg by putting a rod in it

Animal workers at the Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Center say other than being sleepy, Cabela is doing well.

Cabela was found Wednesday afternoon tied with a belt to the train tracks about 100 feet north of Eskimo Drive in the Sulphur Springs area. She was shot twice in the neck and above the right shoulder. Officers responding to reports of gunshots in the area rushed the dog to the vet.

A reward of more than $5,000 has been offered for information leading to the person who injured the dog.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is offering a $2,500 reward for anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect who shot Cabela. Anyone with information is asked to call 813-231-6130.

In addition, Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information in the case.
