Detectives are searching for answers in the shooting death of a former St. Petersburg police sergeant at his ex-wife's home in Indian Rocks Beach late Saturday night.

John Joseph Rush, 45, who retired from the St. Petersburg Police Department in 2005, was shot to death at 2601 1st St., the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said. The home belongs to Rush's ex-wife, Cara A. Ryan, according to property records.

Deputies have identified Ryan, 45, as the person who shot the victim. Neither she nor anyone else has been charged in the shooting.

Rush and Ryan divorced in 2006, and investigators haven't offered an explanation for why Rush was at the home Saturday night. They did say the shooting appeared to be domestic-related.

Ryan is a media and social studies teacher at Clearwater High School, according to the school's website.

The home is located in a residential area of the beach community on the Intracoastal Waterway side of Gulf Boulevard. Property records describe it as a duplex or triplex.
