Two people from New Port Richey died Sunday after their car was rear-ended by a tractor trailer at a red light on State Road 54 near the Suncoast Parkway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Just before 7 a.m., a 2011 Buick Lucerne was stopped at a right light at on S.R. 54 at Crossing Boulevard when when a truck hauling a tires ran into the car, troopers said.

The driver of the Buick, an 83-year-old woman, died at the scene. A 78-year-old male passenger died later at St. Joseph's Hospital-North. Their identities have not been released.

The driver of the truck, Phillip Starling, 48, of Odessa was not injured. Charges are pending, the FHP said.
