A 61-year-old man was killed Monday night when he was struck by a vehicle on 18th Avenue S., police said.

Jimmie Lee Knight was hit by a car on 18th Ave. S. near 29th Street just after 8:30 p.m. Officers said it appears Knight was standing in the center of the road as traffic passed him in both directions just before he was struck.

Police said it is unclear if Knight stepped out into traffic or if the vehicle left its lane and hit him.

Knight was transported to Bayfront Health St Petersburg in critical condition. He died a short time later.

The car that struck him, a 1996 Chevrolet four-door sedan, was driven by Jovito Jubbar Boyd, who was in the car with his girlfriend. They were not injured. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The crash was the second fatal pedestrian crash in three nights in St. Petersburg.

Police said a speeding drunk driver struck and killed a local chef Saturday night in downtown St. Petersburg.

Just after 2 a.m., Jason Lanard Mitchell, 25, of St. Petersburg was speeding on 2nd Street N in a rented Dodge Charger. The car blew through a red light at Central Avenue and hit Aaron Jerome Davis, 31, of Largo and Brian Lee LaFrance, 28, of St. Petersburg, throwing Davis to the other side of the street, police said.

Davis died at the scene. LaFrance remains hospitalized.

Mitchell and a passenger, Rayvorris Altuan Oliver, 27, fled the scene and were arrested at the nearby Push Ultra Lounge a short time later. Mitchell has been charged with DUI manslaughter, aggravated fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a crash involving death and DUI with serious bodily injury.

Davis was a chef at The Kitchen, a restaurant just west of 2nd Street on 1st Avenue N. His wife Ana gave birth to the couple's second child, a baby boy, on Tuesday.
