If you’re packing up for summer travel, you might consider TSA Pre-Check to get through the security line faster.

Going through security is one of the necessary hassles of travel. But signing up for the TSA Pre-Check program can save a lot of time and aggravation. Some of the perks include shorter lines, keeping your shoes and jacket on, keeping your laptop in its bag, and not having to put all your liquids into one zip lock bag.

The program is catching on. At Tampa International Airport, Lee Kair, the Greater Tampa Bay Federal Security Director, says the TSA office processes about 70 passengers a day.

“You can schedule an appointment and they also do walk in’s here,” Kair said. “This is actually one of the busiest enrollment centers in the country.”

Tampa is tops in the state for the number of passengers it has processed. The Orlando area comes in third. Nationwide, the TSA Pre-Check program has enrolled more than 1 million people.

To apply, you need a photo ID, proof of citizenship, like a passport or birth certificate, and you must agree to get fingerprinted and have a background check.

According to the TSA, it’s not just faster for you, it also makes travel safer for everyone.

“Basically, it allows us to focus on those we don’t know about, so if you’re a known traveler and we know info about your background, you’re a lower risk passenger,” Kair said.

Domestic Pre-Check costs $85 and will last five years. There’s an added bonus for families. If both parents have TSA Pre-Check, children under 12 get to go through as well.

Once you apply it takes about a week for everything to be finalized.

There’s a program for international fliers as well. It’s called Global Entry and is through the Customs and Border Protection Agency. The process is a little more in-depth and costs $100 for five years. However, if you sign up for Global Entry, domestic TSA Pre-Check is included.
