A Polk County girl has become a national sensation after she invented a device she hopes will help stop bullying.

For a class project, Alexis Martin, 8, came up with a band for children that alerts an adult with the push of a button. Alexis, who is in third grade at Spessard L. Holland Elementary in Bartow, named it the anti-bully band.

"How it works if you are being bullied, you would press a button on the anti-bully band, this would send a message of your location to your parent or teacher, then your teacher would go to the location and stop the bullying," Alexis explained.

The invention has not only earned Alexis the top prize in the 2015 USF Young Innovators Competition, but it also earned her two trophies and a spot on the "The Today Show."

Her mom, Lora, is thrilled.

"It's been a whirlwind," she said. "I joke that I'm her manager now."

Since appearing on "The Today Show" and winning the USF competition, Alexis has gotten calls to show her anti-bully band on other national programs. Her dream is to put the anti-bully band in stores all over the country.
