A 36-year-old Bartow woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday on Martin Luther King Boulevard near U.S. 17 in Bartow, police said.

Around 7:30 a.m., Takashemia Sanders was heading west in the 1700 block of MLK Boulevard when she lost control of her 2000 Ford Explorer as it struck a railroad crossing.

The sport utility vehicle left the road and struck a tree, ejecting Sanders and her passenger, 30-year-old Mickal Graham of Bartow, police said.

Sanders died at the scene. Graham was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers say speed was likely a factor in the crash. They're still investigating.
