Some grim numbers to tell you about when it comes to boating here in Florida and Coast Guard leaders say there's a simple way to stay safe.

The weather is warm so more and more people are getting out on the water for some fun. Jason Dixon takes his jet ski out as much as possible.

"Absolutely," he said. "Been waiting all winter for this."

He has been enjoying the water off Hernando County for years and doesn't mess around when it comes to safety.

"Life jacket all the time no matter what," he said.

That's music to the ears of Kitty Dolan. She is with the Hernando Beach Coast Guard Auxiliary and has some sobering numbers to share.

She said in 2013 there were 62 boating fatalities due to drowning in Florida. Seventy-five percent of those people killed were not wearing a life jacket.

"Lives could have been saved," Dolan said.

So Kitty and the other Coast Guard members on Hernando Beach are on a mission. They're going to paint yellow "life jacket zone" messages all over the place.

There are 17 boat ramps in Hernando County and each ramp is going to get at least one painted message.

Kitty said it is simple, wear a life jacket when you head out on the water because things can take an ugly turn quickly.

"Especially if you have children on board," she said. "Yes they may know how to swim in a swimming pool, but you put them in a panic situation and they may not always be able to swim."

Jason said the "life jacket zone" in a good idea and hopes more people play it safe.

"Best thing you can do is put a jacket on," he said.

Kitty said the "life jacket zone" messages will be showing up all over the Bay area.
