Out on the eastern side of Hernando County there aren't a lot of job opportunities. It's very rural and most businesses are huddled around I-75.

Sheila Helton just got some bad news. The Denny's near I-75 where she works just closed. Now she and about 35 other people are out of work.

"I'm pretty much numb," she said.

County leaders are aware of the lack of jobs in eastern Hernando, so they are pushing to change that. They say Taco Bell is coming soon and they continue to try to attract more businesses. Jennifer Farleigh also worked at Denny's.

"It's difficult for a lot of us," she said. "A lot of people are losing their homes because they don't have jobs."

In January Hernando's jobless rate was about 7.5 percent. That's one of the higher rates in the state.

County leaders say in other parts of Hernando things are picking up. Businesses are expanding and new ones are setting up shop. County leaders say 200 new jobs are on the horizon.

Meanwhile, back at Denny's, a few employees are cleaning up and packing up. They're trying to stay positive.

"We'll bounce back," Helton said. "We'll be ok."

County leaders say State Road 50 at I-75 should be widened in the next few years, so that should help create some growth.
