A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train in Davenport Monday afternoon.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a Miami-bound southbound Amtrak passenger train, with 10 passenger cars and two engines, was traveling 50 mph on the tracks in Davenport around 2 p.m. when the conductor observed a man walking in the tracks ahead of them, also heading southbound.

The conductor blew the horn repeatedly while also applying the brakes, according to the sheriff’s office. The man did not leave the tracks or make any indication that he was aware of the approaching train.

The train was unable to avoid striking the man, who died at the scene. The victim’s identity has not been released.
