There are new rules for sex offenders in Pasco County.

Commissioners today unanimously voted to extend the barrier from place like schools and playgrounds to 2,500 feet.

“It certainly will make me feel more safe in these sort of public environments, like the park we're at now,” said parent Heather Shoup.

Currently, state law requires all registered sex offenders to live at least 1,000 feet from parks, playgrounds, schools and daycare centers.

The new rule also adds libraries as one of the places they must stay away from.

“They're registered. I mean they have to live somewhere, so I get that too. But too close to the school is kinda a good law,” said parent Wendy Conti.

But there are some other parents who aren't sure it will really make a difference.

“I'd be interested to see what the science is behind it. Is there decreased recidivism when offenders are kept further away from areas like this, or is it just a little bit of theatrics,” said parent Joe Tomasone.

Any current registered sex offender whose home falls within the new boundaries will be grandfathered into the new ordinance.
