Members of Congress have some questions and concerns surrounding a Bay area man's gyrocopter flight to the Capitol.

Members of the House Oversight Committee met with the Secret Service, Capitol Police and the Sergeant at Arms yesterday about how the breach of security happened.

Last Wednesday, Doug Hughes, of Ruskin, landed his gyrocopter on the grounds of the Capitol in a stop to draw attention to campaign-finance reform.

"One of the things that I think was a very frustrating to members of Congress is that there was no notification," said Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz. "We never got any alert that something was happening at the Capitol. That's inexcusable."

Officials say Hughes was able to fly his gyrocopter 30 miles in restricted airspace flying over the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the National Mall, and all the way to Capitol Hill.

"Judgment calls were made to, and at the very end, to not take this person down," says Chaffetz. "But I'm convinced that they could've taken him down if they had so chosen."

Representatives from the FAA, NORAD and the Park Police were also invited to the briefing, but did not attend.

The Oversight Committee is holding a formal hearing next Wednesday where all six agencies will be required to attend and testify.

Meanwhile Hughes is under house arrest in Ruskin until his next hearing in Washington, DC on May 8.
