It’s been months in the making and now Florida Polytechnic University has finally decided on a mascot.

Florida Polytechnic University has almost everything a beautiful new campus, state of the art technology and topnotch professors and students. The only thing missing is a mascot.

And who better to decide and design the mascot than the students? The voting process was no joke.

There were 20 student teams in the mascot competition. Ultimately the one group took the top prize after a school wide vote.

Florida Poly freshman, Veronica Perez would know, she was on the team who proposed the winning design.

“We were not even in the top four. We were a write-in so I was so surprised that we won. I was like wow!” Perez said.

So how do you make a mascot for a school with a building as cool as this one? Easy, just incorporate the school into the mascot design.

And a room filled with dozens, possibly hundreds of people the new Florida Poly Phoenix was revealed.

“I like the way it ties into the building. I thought that was really cool,” said students Jennie Kindle.

Perez said when they designed the mascot they had something specific in mind. “The phoenix represents new beginnings. A rise from the ashes,” said Perez.

FL Poly Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Steven Warner said it’s even more specific.

“There are four wings on each side so one of the sides represents STEM. Science, technology, engineering and math. The other side represents the core values for the institution,” he said.

The school’s four core values of adaptability, Collaboration, Innovation and Leadership are also represented.

The school wasted no time handing out Poly Phoenix t-shirts, stickers and buttons the students, faculty and donors at the reveal event.
