Move over Zumba, there’s a new workout taking over the spotlight.

It’s surfing, but it doesn’t involve the water.

“It’s a new wave, a new form of training,” said Sophie Geoffroy, a fitness trainer at the YMCA in Lakewood Ranch. “We’re not here to count reps, to count minutes we have left. We’re here to have fun. We’re surfing.”

The Lakewood Ranch YMCA just started offering the class, which they call Surfset Fitness. It’s a class that allows indoor wave riders to avoid the beach and a sunburn, while surfing their way to a toned body.

Geoffroy said you don’t need prior surfing experience to join in. All you need to do is jump on one of their surfboards, balance, and get a total body workout.

“It’s not dance related, it’s not a lot of complicated moves,” said Cheryl Edwards, who enjoys taking the Surfset classes. “It’s just your body and the board and a good workout.”

The class offers a good workout that works the smaller muscle groups in your body, just like surfing does, except instead of heading to the beach, you surf in an air conditioned studio.

When you are on the board, you actually feel like you are surfing on the water. There are three balls attached underneath the surfboard, that are partially filled with air. This makes the board feel a little wobbly.

It’s surfing experience that not only allows participants to get fit, but also helps them learn to surf.

“You can start here and then go to the ocean,” said Geoffroy.

The aerobics surf class was started by Mike Hartwick, a professional hockey player, who enjoyed surfing during the off season. He pitched Surfset on the show “Shark Tank.”

For now, only the Lakewood Ranch YMCA branch is offering the surfing class in Manatee County. Soon, the Parrish and Bradenton locations will be offering it as well.
