Pinellas County is considering a plan to dig up the trash at an old St. Petersburg landfill known as Toytown.

Toytown has sat vacant for decades. County leaders would love to sell it, but the trash underground and the methane gas the trash emits pose a challenge.

The county's waste department is launching a study to see whether their crews should dig up the trash before putting the landfill on the market.

"We want to be able to determine how much waste is here, how deep it is, and basically how much has it decayed," said Pinellas County Solid Waste Division Manager Deb Bush.

County leaders also want to determine how much it would cost for their crews to get rid of the trash.

Pinellas County's Solid Waste Department will soon take bids from companies to conduct the study on the landfill.

The study is expected to take until the end of the year to complete.
