A 12-year-old girl was shot in both legs while asleep in her bed overnight in what Hillsborough County deputies are calling a drive-by shooting.

Deputies said someone fired shots at a home at 807 Joe McIntosh Road in Plant City just before 3:30 a.m.

The girl's parents and two children, ages 12 and 15, live at the residence.

"She’s in a lot of pain and I just hope they do what they gotta do to get this idiot for my child," said the girl's mother.

Officials said the girl was asleep in her bed in a bedroom in the front of the home when she was shot in both calves. She was flown to Tampa General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"Whoever did this, I want them captured," the girl's mother said. "I don’t want this to happen to anyone else’s child.

Friends at Marshall Middle School made the girl get well cards and wrote letters sharing encouragement.

The family plans on moving to a new home.

"I will never live here again," said the girl's mother. "This is not my home anymore."

There were no other injuries.

Deputies are investigating the shooting.
