Two best friends are about to bike more than 4,000 miles across the country to help cancer patients.

On May 31, Sonja Wagner, 25, and her best friend Devon Callagy will ride their bikes from Baltimore to Seattle.

The trip is expected to take two months and will hopefully raise a lot of money.

Wagner is a cancer survivor and wants to help people who may not have gotten the kind of support she had.

“As a survivor it’s something that is very important to me," said Wagner. "I had tons of support. Family, friends, doctors, but I know everybody doesn’t have that,”

The more than 4,000 mile ride is a big feat for a girl who has battled a big disease.

Wagner said she’s fought cancer for years.

“It’s a very rare form of cancer, it’s called malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor,” she said.  “I was diagnosed when I was a sophomore in college. It was stage four and I was given a 50 percent chance.”

Wagner says she’s beat cancer and had a number of operations. She got so much support from her family and friends now she wants to help others like her.

The bike ride will help her do that by raising money for a cancer charity.

Thankfully she’s not doing it alone. Her best friend, Callagy, who is also a nurse will be right next to her for the ride- in her shadow.

“The plan is take it one day at a time,” Callagy said. “We’ll see. I’ve never biked 4,500 miles in my life. The most I’ve done was maybe once so it will be an adventure.”

Wagner said she couldn’t imagine riding a bike that far with anyone else.

“She’s my sidekick. We’re pretty much never separated. We’re been through everything together through the bad and now we want to do something good,” she said.

The ride will raise money for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. The proceeds will go directly to cancer patients for everything from basic necessities to scholarships. To donate go to http://4kforcancer.org/profiles/sonja-wagner/#
