Residents in East Bradenton spent their weekend trying to clean up their property from storm damage.

Last Thursday, a microburst came through Manatee County knocking down trees and ripping off roofs.

“It looks like it came from underneath from this side here and basically pushed the roof off the other side,” said Calvin Johnston, who lives on 115th St. East in Bradenton.

He is pointing to the area of his horse barn where half of the roof was ripped off in Thursdays afternoon storm.

“It’s been hectic trying to get everything straightened up,” he said.

Johnston said the winds were so powerful, it knocked his fences to the ground.

“Two hundred feet of fence had fallen over at which point my wife and I started looking for the horses,” he said. “To make sure that none of them got out.”

The horses were scared but unharmed when the roof ripped off. Sunday, its remnants remained scattered across the farm and even in high trees.

Next door to Johnston, neighbor Dennis Kanipe’s property is covered with large fallen trees.

“We had a crane come in so we could chainsaw heavy branches off of the house and lift them off with the crane without doing any more damage,” he said.

Damage he hasn’t stopped cleaning up. However, he is thankful his house is still standing and his family is safe.

“I think the trees actually saved the house from the storm. If the trees hadn’t been there they house would have blown away,” he said.

Bay News 9 Meteorologist Josh Linker said we could have more inclement weather this week.

“You defiantly want to use extra care being outside. The weather could change very quickly. You could have a line of thunderstorms coming in the wind gusts could pick up. So you defiantly want to be careful out there,” he said.

News that Johnston is not ready for, as the remaining metal on his barn is already on the verge of tearing.

“The obvious concern is that we could have missile hazards basically if another strong wind comes through,” he said.

Johnston and Kanipe both have insurance. However, they are not sure just how much it will cost to clean up their properties. Linker said that we could have a wet week with rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms.
