An event in downtown Tampa Sunday night helped raise awareness about sexual violence, and encouraged victims and survivors to speak out.

Hundreds filled Curtis Hixon Park to 'Take Back the Night.'  It was part of the fight against sexual violence and meant to help empower victims.

Some of those who took to the stage were survivors, bravely speaking out for the first time.

Amanda Brennan planned to share her story.

"I had a counselor, and I got counseling at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, and once I had worked through my trauma, I decided it was time for me to share my voice and my strength," said Brennan.

T-shirts with messages of grief, remembrance, and survival lined the park in downtown Tampa.

Brennan hoped by talking about what happened to her, she will encourage others to speak out too.

"It is the most beautiful thing to be able to witness someone come here, and be a victim and watch them get on stage and tell their story for the first time, and leave a survivor," she said.

Live music, a candle light vigil and a silent march were also part of the event.
