A woman was struck and killed on a rural road in Bartow on Monday night after apparently getting into an argument with her husband and exiting their vehicle, authorities said.

Lorine Marlene Young, 41, of Fort Meade was was walking south on unlit 80 Foot Road around 10 p.m. when a Nissan Altima approached from behind, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the Nissan, 22-year-old Crista Kay Todd of Winter Haven, told deputies she saw Young and tried to avoid hitting her, but was unsuccessful. Todd stopped and called for assistance, and deputies and emergency personnel responded to the scene. They attempted to render aid, but Young died.

Witnesses told investigators Young had been traveling with her husband on 80 Foot Road when the couple had a disagreement and she got out of the vehicle to walk, the sheriff's office said. She was wearing dark clothing.
