Holmes Beach residents worried about losing post offices boxes are expressing their concerns today.

A meeting is being held this morning at City Hall about the future of P.O. box service at the post office at 5343 Gulf Drive.

Jack Jackson and Peggy Myers have operated the mail service for 20 years. They are ready to retire, but whoever takes over the facility won't have a contract with the Postal Service to continue operation of the 250 P.O. boxes at the location.

The Postal Service plans to move all of the boxes to their two other government-operated post office facilities on the island.

One is at the north end in Anna Maria. The other is in Bradenton Beach. Customers say they’re not happy about this. The postal service said one of the reasons for the change is because of the close proximity of the two post offices.

Rep. Vern Buchanan and postal officials are scheduled to be in attendance.

City Hall is located at 5901 Marina Drive.

Concerned citizens can contact the Postal Regulatory Commission.
