A St. Petersburg man died on Thursday afternoon after his car struck a concrete pole near Stetson University.

According to investigators, Edwin Brantley was driving a gold 2000 Ford Taurus west on Gulfport Boulevard at a high rate of speed.

As the roadway curved, the Ford left the roadway and struck a concrete pillar to a fence along the southern perimeter of Stetson University, officials said. The vehicle continued through the fence striking a tree, rolling over and ejecting Brantley.

The vehicle then caught on fire. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Department.

Brantley was transported to Palm of Pasadena Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs are factors in the crash.

The crash is under investigation.
