Fourteen Bay area dancers are headed to New York City this week.

The students train with the NextGeneration Ballet School at the Straz Center and Patel Conservatory.

"To have 14 from one school is pretty unprecedented," said Artistic Director Peter Stark.

The dancers were selected out of 5,000 to compete in the Youth America Grand Prix. It's the largest student ballet competition in the world.

"I'm really excited," said dancer Tucker Nickman. "I've never had an opportunity like this before."

"I'm pretty nervous, but it's important to just be confident and just do what you can, that's all you can do," said dancer Chloe Pruett.

Each dancer will have only a few minutes to make that lasting impression. And if they're selected, they could earn scholarships to some of the top tier ballet schools.

The Youth America Grand Prix will last a week.
