A Bay area student is back home after the political experience of a lifetime.

University of South Florida St. Petersburg senior Tyler Lewis just returned from an internship at the White House. He worked for the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.

"The internship was a lot of work but the result was amazing," Lewis said. "The work I was doing was really impacting the country and it wasn't just stapling papers. The work that I was doing was real and it was making change happen. I definitely value the experience I got."

Lewis went through a rigorous application process to get the internship. His professor, a former White House intern, recommended him for the job.

"It's a really prestigious program and it is very, very selective as you might imagine, so this was an amazing opportunity to have one of our USF St. Petersburg students up at the White House," said USF Professor Judithanne Scourfield McLauchlan.

Lewis was one of two Bay area students to intern at the White House last spring.

He said he hopes to run for political office one day.
