A 54-year-old man died Monday night when he was hit by a car shortly after leaving Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center, troopers say.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man, who was homeless, was found in a ditch. Medical staff brought him in and hydrated him, then released him when he had recovered.

Troopers say he had just left the parking lot and was walking west across U.S. 19 when he stepped into the path of an oncoming 2005 Hyundai Elantra.

The man was taken back to Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

The man's identity has not been released.
