The last few days have been rather hot, humid and stormy in the late afternoon and evenings.

Looks and feels a lot like summer around here.

Typically, we think of our summer storm and rainy season as kicking off sometime in June.

But, it certainly isn’t abnormal to get a few “summerlike” days in May. Even early May.

Looking back at the last 15 years, just about all of them had a string of days in May with summerlike storms.

But, in each case, we ended up with a break from the storms before the season finally kicked in.

That means the early summer storm preview shuts off for a little while. This year that will probably be the same.

In looking forward in the 7-14 day time frame, the computer model trends are suggesting typical May weather. That means, we will see warm to hot conditions and little chance for daily storms.

So, the bigger question is what is the reason for this preseason preview? In reality, there isn’t much of a specific answer to that. Often in weather, especially heading into a new season, there are transitional periods.

In the case of heading from our typical dry spring to our typically wet summer, the weather doesn’t simply “look at the calendar.”

So, some conditions that are prevalent in the summer are nearby and most years make a brief appearance in our area.

But, so too are the conditions that keep us very warm and dry. So, even though for some of the lawns, this rain has been good, we will likely need the lawn sprinklers toward the end of the month before the normal storm season kicks back in.
