Before summer vacation arrives, a Hernando County elementary school is reaching out across the world to help some students in need.

Students at Brooksville Elementary School have learned a big lesson this year. They now know they have the power to help others around the world.

"You can help anywhere," said fifth grader Jillian Gibson.

Students and faculty are wrapping up a project that will help some students in Australia.

The school is in a poor and remote part of northern Australia and Jillian knows she will probably never meet the kids she is helping.

"You do it anyway," she said. "Because an education is good everywhere. Doesn't have to be here."

The kids at Brooksville Elementary donated and helped raise about $2,000 that will be used to buy books for the Australian students that are learning English.

Kathleen Gates is one of the teachers that got the project going. She said it has been a big eye opener for the kids.

"Remember that these children are Aborigine children and they live far out in the middle of nowhere," she said.

Fourth grader Emmanuel Graves said he will never forget what his school has done.

"It feels really good and I'm proud of it," he said.
