St. Petersburg police are still trying to determine why a 67-year-old man was lying in a street when he was run over early Wednesday by a police cruiser.

Police said Mark F. Duffy had been reported missing from the Wirick Assited Living Facility at 434 4th Street North on Monday.

Duffy was lying in the eastbound lane in the 800 block of Lake Maggiore Boulevard South, just east of the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street at 2:45 a.m. when Officer Nicholas Lazzari turned his marked cruiser turned onto the street.

Lazzari was traveling north when he drove over Duffy, who officials said is small and was wearing dark clothes. The officer stopped and immediately called for emergency crews, police said.

Duffy was transported to Bayfront Health St Petersburg, where he is in serious condition.
