Lakeland police have stepped up patrols in the Lake Hollingsworth area after a woman was attacked on the trail.

A 22-year-old woman said she was attacked while running late at night on Tuesday. Police say she told them a man grabbed her from behind and dragged her into a small wooded area, where he tried to take off her shorts. The woman was able to distract him, then escape and call 911.

The next day, police say there was another incident at the lake involving a man sitting on a bench in front of Florida Southern College performing lewd acts. Witnesses say he appeared to be watching women as they ran and walked past.

Investigators said they don't know if the incidents are related, and that both cases are still being investigated. In addition, officials say the police presence in the Lake Hollingsworth area has been increased.

Police released a drawing of the suspect in the first attack in hopes that a member of the public will recognize him. He is described as a black man in his mid-20s who is about 5'5" with a medium build. He had plaited braids and wore a black do-rag.

Anyone with information on either of these cases is asked to call 863-834-8981 or Crime Stoppers at 800-226-8477.
