Here's what you need to know about the weather heading into the Memorial Day weekend:

  • This weekend will be hot, with highs in low 90s
  • Showers and thunderstorms are likely in the late afternoon

The Memorial Day weekend got off to a hot, sunny start before giving way to scattered showers Saturday afternoon.

Easterly winds of 8-15 mph kept the sea breeze right at the beaches.  So when storms began, that is where they stayed. 1” to 3” rain totals were in Western Hernando, Western Pasco, Pinellas and Northwest Hillsborough Counties.  3” of rain fell in Hernando Beach and Honeymoon Island.

We had 2 very strong storms. One produced dime-size hail in Trinity. The other was over Tampa Bay and produced 56 mph winds at St. Pete/Clearwater airport.

Since the sea breeze made no progress inland even the coastal areas saw high temperatures in the low to mid 90s.  Tampa hit 94, the record is 95.

Sunday and Monday look very similar. It will be hot with an easterly breeze. It will stay dry early in the day.  Storms will develop near the coast in the mid to late afternoon and evening.
