Detectives are looking for a man who they say posed as an undercover officer, then stole a man's wallet, car keys and cell phone.

The incident happened Monday at 9:55 a.m. in the area of Clay Pit Road and State Road 579.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Jose Reyes, 34, said he was driving north on State Road 579 when the suspect vehicle came up behind him, honking the horn and holding what appeared to be a badge out of the window.

Reyes pulled over, and the suspect got out of his car and walked up to the victim's vehicle and identified himself as an undercover narcotics officer, officials said.

The suspect told Reyes he had a warrant for his arrest and needed to search his vehicle, deputies said. While searching the vehicle, the suspect took Reyes's wallet, keys and cell phone, the report said.

The suspect had Reyes come back to the suspect's vehicle and sit in the back seat. He then told Reyes to go back to his vehicle and retrieve another piece of identification, and when Reyes got out of the suspect vehicle, the suspect fled in the opposite direction.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 40s, clean-shaven with a short hair cut. He is between 5'8" and 5'10" and weighs about 170 pounds, and he was last seen in a blue T-shirt and jeans. Deputies said he had a chrome or nickel-plated gun on his left side in a holster.

The suspect's vehicle is described as a dark blue SUV, possibly a Toyota 4-Runner or a Chevy Trailblazer, with a gray cloth interior.

Deputies said they believe this robbery could be connected to a similar one that took place Sunday in Lakeland.
