The man accused of impersonating a police officer in two Bay area counties apparently is no stranger to the crime.

Now facing charges in Polk and Hillsborough counties, Marcos Felix Hernandez-Gonzalez once impersonated an officer in New Jersey, officials said.

Hernandez-Gonzalez, 35, was arrested in Polk County on Wednesday. He is facing charges of impersonating an officer, robbery with a firearm, armed kidnapping with a firearm, and grand theft.

On Thursday, Haines City police charged him with additional counts of armed kidnapping, armed robbery, false impersonation of a law enforcement officer in the commission of a felony and grand theft.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Hernandez-Gonzalez conducted an illegal traffic stop on a victim by flashing his headlights on Clay Pit Road and Lemon Avenue in Seffner on Monday. Deputies said he stole the victim’s wallet, car keys, and cell phone.

Additionally, Hernandez-Gonzalez, who lives in Kissimmee, has also been charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer in Haines City, where he is accused of robbing at least two people.

He also is being investigated for impersonating an officer in Lakeland.

Officials said he was targeting Hispanic drivers that may have had immigration issues - meaning the crimes were less likely to be reported. Deputies said Hernandez-Gonzalez flashed a badge and a gun at victims, telling them they were under arrest for not paying child support.

He then took valuables from victim's cars and pockets and took office, officials said.

"Obviously he’s been doing this, that we know of reported, over in Polk County," said HCSO Maj. Alan Hill. "We have one incident reported in Hillsborough County. We just want to make sure there are no other victims out there."

Hernandez-Gonzalez's criminal history includes 15 felony arrests dating back to 2001 in New Jersey. His previous charges include credit card fraud, robbery and weapons charges in addition to impersonating an officer.

Hernandez-Gonzalez remains jailed in Polk County but will be transferred to Hillsborough County in the next few days to face charges.

Bond has been set at $337,500.
