A 20-year-old Inverness man has been arrested and charged with child neglect.

According to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, Jonathan Owens was taken into custody Wednesday night at his home.

Authorities have charged Owens with child neglect with great bodily harm and permanent disability and disfigurement. An additional charge of aggravated charge abuse may be pending.

The charges stem from an incident that prompted a 911 call April 18 from a Microtel Inn and Suites in Bushnell, in Sumter County.

Upon arrival, authorities found a 4-month-old having difficulty breathing.

The child was transported to Citrus Regional Hospital where a CAT scan revealed bleeding on the child's brain. As a result, the child was transferred to the trauma unit at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

An examination revealed the child was a victim of a "shaken baby" incident. The infant also had a broken rib and a recent head injury that was severe enough to produce vomiting.

Dr. Sally Smith, a child protection doctor for Pinellas County, examined the child and spoke with Owens.

Authorities said their investigation determined the child's injuries occurred when he and the child were alone in the hotel room.

As a result, the 4-month old, along with a 14-month-old sibling, were taken into protective custody.

Owens' bond has been set at $50,000.
