Part of a Hernando County road has now been named in honor of a fallen deputy.

It's a stretch of road that haunts a lot of memories. Sheriff's Capt. Scott Bierwiler was killed in 2009 along here. His mother Maureen still feels the heartache.

"Part of my heart went with him," she said. "I truly will never be the same. Every mother knows that when they lose a child, there is just no explanation."

Family, friends, fellow deputies and community leaders gathered along the side of the road near to where Capt. Bierwiler lost his life. They gathered to remember.

"The pain will never go away," his mother said.

Capt. Bierwiler was on his way to work on Powell Road. Another car hit him head on and he was killed. Now a part of the road has been named in Bierwiler's honor. One sign is up and the other was unveiled at the ceremony.

Col. Michael Maurer says Bierwiler had been with the sheriff's office for 23 years. He was a rising star and talked about being sheriff one day.

"Lost a great friend that day and a great leader," Maurer said. "I was ten minutes behind him that morning and talked to him on the phone about having coffee ready."

"There was nothing he ever wanted but to be a police man from the time he was three, so he was doing what he loved," his mother said.

So a stretch of road filled with so much heartache is now a memorial to a man loved by so many.

The part of Powell Road named after Bierwiler goes from Barclay Avenue to U.S. 41.
