Cuba has officially been removed from a list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Secretary of State John Kerry rescinded Cuba's designation as a sponsor of terrorism, effective Friday. The rescission follows a 45-day congressional notification period, which began on April 14 when President Barack Obama announced his intent to remove Cuba from the list.

The State Department says they reviewed Cuba's designation, and they found that the nation had not sponsored international terrorism during the past six months, and that it had promised not to do so in the future.

The rescission is the latest in a series of steps aimed to resolve issues that would allow the United States and Cuba to normalize relations. The U.S. severed diplomatic with the island nation in 1961.

Syria, Sudan and Iran are the countries still on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list.
