After a full day of searching, divers were unsuccessful in finding a man who went swimming and then disappeared Wednesday in a St. Petersburg retention pond.

The recovery effort will resume tomorrow morning, said St. Petersburg Fire Rescue.

According to witnesses, the man stripped off his clothes Wednesday evening and jumped into the pond, located near a Save-A-Lot grocery store near at 28th Avenue N. and 35th Street.

At least two people saw the man get in the water around 7:45 p.m. but did not see him get out.

One of the witnesses, a friend of the man, told officers his friend was intoxicated and said he was going into the pond for a swim. He took off some of his clothes, leaving them on the bank before going into the water.

The clothing was recovered, along with the man's identification.

St. Pete Fire Rescue suspended its search late last night. Officials with the rescue dive team said divers could only see about six to 12 inches in the murky dark water.

Not only is the water filled with algae, but divers also found construction debris, making the search more dangerous for them.

"It’s basically debris from construction, (and) we don’t know how the debris got into the lake," said Lt. Steve Lawrence of St. Pete Fire Rescue. "There is some debris that is concerning the divers. Again, they are in dry suits, and if they get ripped or entangled, they can get trapped themselves."
