A summer school teacher was charged with child abuse on Friday after deputies said she put a plastic bag over a 10-year-old boy's head, cutting off his air supply.

Erica Berrios, 19, of Wimauma, told deputies was only playing around when she put the bag over the boy's head for 30 seconds. Berrios was charged with one count of child abuse.

Berrios was the boy's H.O.S.T. teacher at Cypress Creek Elementary School.

Deputies said the boy had to rip a hole in the bag to breathe, before falling to the ground.

According to Hillsborough County school officials, Berrios passed a level two background screening which cleared her to work with and around children.

School officials were brought into the investigation to question the 19-year-old.

"Once it was confirmed that she did what was alleged, we fired her," said school district spokesman Steve Hegarty.

Berrios was booked into the Hillsborough County Orient Road Jail.
