The chairs at Florida Polytechnic University may be empty for the summer, but come August, the new school will be not so new anymore, and full of new students.

"The biggest surprise is that there were no surprises," said Scott Rhodes, Florida Poly's vice provost for enrollment. "Things went really great, and we're super excited for when the students are going to be coming back soon."

And they'll be coming back by the hundreds.

"We're projecting 615 students are going to be coming in the fall," Rhodes said.

But how many actually applied? School officials said application numbers were actually down to 2,000 this year, compared to 3,000 applications last year.

That's not to say students don't think Florida Poly is the place to be. Let's not forget the university is offering the new class free tuition and housing.

School leaders said they have an idea of what may have caused the decline.

"It's gone down a little bit, but we are charging an application fee this year," Rhodes said. "Last year, we didn't."

Though there are no students on campus now, the school is open for any students to come and take a tour inside the world of Florida Poly, a school which leaders say has endless possibilities.

Florida Poly is also building new housing for its increased student body, set to be completed by 2016.
