A Tarpon Springs neighborhood was evacuated on Monday evening after police found military-style explosive devices inside a man's house.

William Vincent Metz, 85, is accused of having anti-personnel mines, M-67 hand grenades and numerous firearms inside his home on Stonefence Way.

Metz was taken into custody earlier today after an explosion occurred in his neighbor's backyard. Metz was arrested for an unrelated charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Metz was taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

During a press conference late Monday night, Tarpon Springs Police Cheif Robert Kochen said Metz is facing additional charges, including seven counts of felon in possession of a firearm, three counts possession of destructive devices, one count possession of a machine gun, one count possession of a short barrel shot gun, and one count possession of a silencer.

Neighboring homes on Stonefence Way were evacuated after detectives found the explosives.

According to police, the explosion happened in Isabel Rodriguez's backyard, on Stonefence Way, just before 12:20 a.m.

Police said Metz has been questioned in connection with the explosion, but he has not been charged.

"The glass in our dining room and back door just all came through," said Rodriguez. "Went in the backyard and there is a huge hole in the ground."

Police said someone targeted the home with Rodriguez, her stepparents, and her 2-year-old daughter inside. None of them were hurt.

"My mom just got done locking all the doors, literally two seconds before it came," Rodriguez said.

Police confirm Metz made two noise complaints this year, but neighbors were unaware of any disputes.

"I mean we've lived here for like 11 years and we've always said, 'hi and bye,' whenever we see him standing out there," Rodriguez said.

Officials received several calls from neighbors reporting a "loud bang." Some neighbors said the explosion sounded like a grenade while others speculated it could have been a pipe bomb.

"You could feel it when it hit," said Kevin Pearce, who lives about four blocks away. "We were outside when it happened and it brought (us) out of our seats."

Tarpon Springs officers, along with detectives, a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office forensics team and the Tampa Regional Bomb Squad responded to the scene.

Bond for Metz weapons possession charge has been set at $10,000.

Metz served 15 non-consecutive years in the New York State prison system.

He first entered the system in 1947 for robbery. Other charges that followed included assault and weapons/ammunition charges. He also was charged with trying to escape while serving time -- all of which happened in the late 40s into the early 60s.
