Ride-sharing company Uber has a new policy: no guns or no rides.

The policy, which prohibits riders and drivers from carrying firearms inside Uber cars, went into effect this month.

“It’s a nice gesture,” Uber driver Nicole Polack said.

And while Polack said she understands not allowing riders to have guns inside her car helps keep her safe, she’s not totally on board. She knows anything can happen at any time.

"I wish I could have a gun in here and be quicker than the guy who wants to pull one on me,” Polack said.

An Uber spokesperson said, “We have adopted a no-firearms policy to ensure people are safe and comfortable using Uber. We made this policy change after assessing our existing policies and reviewing recent feedback from both riders and drivers.”

Local gun advocate and owner of St. Pete Gun Store, Incorporated Jim Hathcock said he thinks the new policy could hurt business.

"I'm sure it bothers a lot of people, they want the freedom so as long as they are law abiding and safe with their firearms,” Hathcock said.

Hathcock said he carries his gun on him at all times, so he won’t be calling an Uber any time soon.

“I probably won't get on,” Hathcock said.

Uber isn’t the first ride-sharing company to implement a no-gun policy. Lyft also doesn’t allow guns inside its cars.
