A St. Petersburg man was taken into custody after police said he ran from the scene of a crash that left another man seriously injured.

Joshua Jonte Campbell, 20, is facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injuries and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

According to Pinellas Park police, Campbell was driving erratically on U.S. 19 near the Target shopping center when at some point, his red 1999 Ford Explorer left the road and hit the west curb.

The SUV overturned and hit a pedestrian signal sign at the southwest corner of U.S. 19 N and 70th Avenue, coming to final rest in the bushes in front of the Walgreens.

Passenger George M. Habbison, 43, was thrown from the SUV. He sustained serious injuries that are not life-threatening and was taken to a local hospital.

Campbell ran from the scene after getting out of the vehicle, police said. A K-9 unit tried unsuccessfully to track him down, but he was eventually taken into custody at around 4:30 a.m. when a resident called police to report a suspicious man riding a bicycle around the neighborhood a few blocks away.

Police responded and found Campbell, who matched the description of the driver in the crash. His nose and forehead had been injured.

Police brought a witness to the crash to the neighborhood, and the witness positively identified Campbell as the driver in the crash.

Campbell was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and released. He was then booked into the Pinellas County Jail.

Police said it appears as though alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, and that the car he was driving at the time was borrowed from a friend who lives in Pasco County.
