In the heat of the summer sun, crews with TB Roofing and Construction work to remodel a gutted St. Petersburg apartment building. An already physically-demanding job gets more difficult as the temperature rises.

"It hurts and it’s hard to eat and it’s hard to go home and stay awake past 8:30," said employee Michael Miller.

"I’m usually behind a computer in a cold office, so it’s gonna take some getting used to,” said employee Justin Shoemaker. “But it’s not fun."

Whether you’re outside because your job depends on it or because you choose to hit the beach, we’re only a few days into summer. Chief Meteorologist Mike Clay says we’re actually normal for this time of year.

"It’s supposed to be hot in June in Florida and our average temperature for the entire month is only a half-degree above normal," said Clay.

With that Florida heat, Priority Health’s Dr. Randy Shuck reminds us of one of the most important ways to ward off heat-related illness.

“Water, water, water,” said Dr. Shuck. He also recommends foods that help hydrate.

"Any fresh fruits and vegetables, there’s going to be a water content you’re going to absorb that water in just like you’re drinking," Shuck said.

The construction crew takes caution and takes cooling breaks.

"You just got to monitor your body,” said Miller.

"You just gotta fight through," said Shoemaker.
