Police are investigating an overnight hit-and-run in Tampa that killed a 60-year-old man.

According to Tampa police, the man was struck by a dark-colored SUV on southbound N 40th Street near E Crawford Street just before 2 a.m.

Witnesses said at least two people were trying to help the man, who was lying in the road next to a bus stop when he was hit by the vehicle and killed.

As one witness pulled over to help the man, another was making a U-turn to come back and help. As the witnesses stopped their cars, the SUV ran over the man and kept going.

The witnesses did not get a description of the driver or see the license plate.

Police have not said why the man, whose identity has not been released, was lying in the road. Officials have only released the victim's age.

An autopsy will take place in the next few days, which could determine what happened to the man before he was struck.

Meanwhile, police are searching for the SUV, which likely will have some type of front-end damage.

Police are asking anyone that may have information to call them at 813-231-6130.
