New Port Richey says families can start counting down the months for its revamped Sims Park.

Most of the park except the north end of the park is closed for the summer.

The city began demolition last month starting with the playground that’s been there for 25 years.

Almost the entire park is being uprooted for renovations that will include kayak facilities, a splash pad, two play areas for younger and older children, a fit zone, and a boardwalk.

Along with the new amenities it will have new landscape and architecture.

“Sims Park is already a premier park for the city, it hosts a lot of festivals and events so we know that this is really going to increase the activity,” said Director of Parks and Recreation, Elaine Smith. “We’re hoping that it’s going to continue to let people see that New Port Richey is a great place to come and live and it will help to continue to beautify our city.”

The total cost of the project is $2.2 million. The city did also receive a $400,000 grant to help with the development.

The city said it’s under an aggressive construction schedule and the park will be ready to open by December.

In the meantime, the city says families who used the playground at Sims Park have a few options nearby that include Grand Boulevard, Francis Avenue Park, and the Grey Preserve.
