Hitting the road for the Fourth of July?

It could cost you a little bit more getting in and out of the Bay area - and not just for gas.

The Florida Department of Transportation is set to increase tolls for SunPass users at 1 a.m. Wednesday. The rates for SunPass users and the Toll by Plate system will rise by 1.6 percent.

The drivers who will be impacted the most won't necessarily be the vacationers hitting the toll roads for the holiday, but those who travel toll roads daily for work.

In the Bay area, the impacted roadways include the Veterans Expressway, the Suncoast Parkway, the Pinellas Bayway, Sunshine Skyway and Polk Parkway.

In most cases, the increase will only be a penny or two per toll booth, so on a long stretch, like the Suncoast Parkway to the Veterans Expressway, drivers would pay an additional 15 to 20 cents.

The increase will also affect drivers in other parts of the state. The affected roads include the Florida Turnpike, Alligator Alley, the Sawgrass Expressway in South Florida and the Beachline Expressway between Orlando and the Space Coast.

Starting Wednesday, the rate for a trip on the entire length of the turnpike will rise from $20.07 to $20.41 for SunPass users and from $24.85 to $24.93 for Toll by Plate.

The tolls on Alligator Alley will increase by a nickel, from $2.85 to $2.90.

So far, the toll increases only apply to pay by plate and SunPass users.

Cash users will not see an increase for now, but that will change in 2017, and those price changes are set to be slightly higher than the current increases.
