Two Sarasota women are facing charges after a 15-year-old boy overdosed on heroin, deputies said.

Cynthia Hyer, 47, is facing charges of neglect of a child causing great harm after deputies said her teenage son overdosed on heroin.

The second woman, identified as Courtney Johnson, 27, is facing charges of child abuse. Deputies said she admitted to using a syringe to inject the teenager with heroin.

The investigation started July 3 after emergency crews responded to a house on Mauna Loa Boulevard after receiving a call about an unconscious teenager. The teen was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for the overdose. He has since recovered.

According to the probable cause affidavits, Hyer admitted to deputies that her home was a "flop house," where people came to use drugs. She said she was aware that Johnson and another woman were using heroin in her house, and she asked them not to give heroin to the teenager.

However, deputies said that Hyer later learned that the women took the teen to buy heroin. They also said she knew he was using prescription drugs and that she allowed him to drink alcohol on her 15th birthday, but did not get him help.

The teen was absent from school 91 days out of 180 school days, deputies said. Hyer said the teen had dropped out of school and didn't want to go anymore.

After the teen recovered, he told deputies that Johnson and the other woman showed him how to inject heroin.

Deputies said Johnson admitted she had used a syringe to inject the teenager with heroin at least once in the days leading up to the overdose. She also said the other woman told her she had given the teenager heroin cut with fentanyl, on which he overdosed, deputies said.

Overdose leads to charges for Bradenton woman

A Bradenton woman is facing charges after deputies said someone overdosed while she was in the house with her baby.

Kayla Miklinski, 20, was arrested Thursday after deputies responded to a call about a male who had overdosed at a house on 33rd Street E in Bradenton.

While deputies were at the house, they saw Xanax, marijuana, heroin and drug paraphernalia, the report said. Miklinski and her 8-month-old son were in the house at the time of the overdose.

Deputies interviewed Miklinski, then took her into custody on charges of child neglect, possession of a controlled substance, possession of heroin and possession of cannabis.

The child was removed from the home by CPS.
